(Kapalua) Phil Mickelson will return to Hawaii for competitive golf, not a vacation: for the first time in 21 years, he will compete in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua.
The event is reserved for the winners of tournaments played during the previous year.
Mickelson prevailed at this tournament at the La Costa resort in 1998.
He’s only competed twice since the tournament moved to the Plantation course in Kapalua in 1999 – most recently it was in 2001, when he finished 28e out of 33.
Mickelson won the PGA Championship last May. He became the oldest major tournament winner in history at age 50.
In Kapalua, from January 6 to 9, we will also find Hideki Matsuyama (Masters Tournament), Jon Rahm (United States Open) and Collin Morikawa (British Open).
Rory McIlroy, victorious at the Wells Fargo Championship in May, will instead start his season in the Middle East, on the European circuit.
