No more need to go to the doctor to get certain medications. Pharmacists can now prescribe antibiotics without a prescription in cases of cystitis or angina, according to the decree published in the Official Journal on Tuesday June 18. This measure, aimed at broadening the skills of pharmacists, was announced by the government in 2023.
The pharmacist must first carry out a rapid diagnostic orientation test, specifies the decree. “If the test is positive (…) we will deliver an antibiotic with an appropriate dosage”, assures Philippe Besset, president of the Federation of community pharmacists, to franceinfo. To carry out this test, you must still meet certain conditions, such as being over 10 years old in the case of bacterial angina and between 16 to 65 years old for cystitis.
The device is designed to relieve general practitioners and respond to medical deserts. “Pharmacists will have to complete two training courses. They will have to register with the regional health agency to be authorized to provide these conditions.”explains Philippe Besset.
The majority of doctors are opposed to this measure because they fear diagnostic errors. But Philippe Besset wants to reassure: “We will have to send our document to the treating doctors by secure health messaging so that they are informed of the care of their patient”he emphasizes.
