PGA Players Championship | World No. 1 Jon Rahm retires with stomach discomfort

(Ponte Vedra Beach) Spaniard Jon Rahm withdrew from the PGA Players Championship on Friday with a stomach complaint, depriving the year’s toughest golf contingent of his player number one.

Rahm started the tournament with a score of 71 on Thursday. He was scheduled to take part in the second round on Friday, along with Scottie Scheffler, ranked second in the world, and Rory McIlroy, ranked third.

He retired about 30 minutes before making his first tee shot with a “severe stomach bug,” as his manager described it.

Rahm already has three PGA Tour wins this season. These performances which allowed him to regain first place in the world rankings.

Scheffler and McIlroy could snatch his spot this week, depending on how well they perform.

McIlroy, who brought back a card of 76 on Thursday, will first have to make sure to cross the qualification threshold.
