PGA Championship | Shane Lowry shoots 62 and ties the record for the best round in a major tournament

(Louisville) Shane Lowry tied the record for the best round at a major tournament by shooting a 62 (minus 9) in the third round of the PGA Championship on Saturday.

The 37-year-old Irishman recorded nine birdies without committing a single bogey on the Valhalla course.

Before Lowry, four players had managed to shoot 62 in one of the four major tournaments, namely the PGA Championship, the Masters Tournament, the British Open and the United States Open. Xander Schauffele was last, after shooting a 62 in Valhalla on Thursday.

Just over 48 hours later, Lowry matched that mark to put himself in good position for a second career major title.

Lowry won the British Open by six strokes at Royal Portrush in 2019. Since then, he has finished in the top-5 of a major tournament on two occasions.

He opened the PGA Championship with two straight rounds of 69 and began Saturday eight shots behind Schauffele. After about five hours of near-perfect play, he made his final putt to show a cumulative score of minus-13.

Lowry made four birdies in a row to play 29 on the front nine. He lost a little rhythm on the back nine, but a birdie at 17e pennant placed him in a position to make history.

At 18e hole, a rather easy par-5 at Valhalla, he sent his tee shot into the tall grass and eventually saw his birdie putt slip to the left of the goal.
