The resignation of a science adviser to the federal pesticide regulator is another example of too much industry influence over Health Canada, according to NDP Health Critic Don Davies.
The Dr Bruce Lanphear, a professor of health sciences at Simon Fraser University, left his post as co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Pest Control Products, which advises the Pest Management Regulatory Agency, at the end of last month. at Health Canada.
He expressed concern about the role played by the pesticide industry in the regulatory process, noting a tendency to favor industry-supplied data over broader, independent studies.
Resignations also on the medication side
New Democratic Party MP Don Davies recalled that in February a board member and the executive director of Canada’s drug price regulator also resigned. They alleged that pressure from industry had blocked reforms aimed at reducing the cost of patented drugs.
The office of Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos did not comment on Mr. Davies’ remarks.
Health Canada said the Pest Management Regulatory Agency is taking advice from the scientific advisory committee, academic experts, pesticide manufacturers, growers and environmental and health advocacy groups.
