Peru in a state of emergency after an explosion of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome

This rare syndrome, which can be fatal in some cases, is “unusually increasing”, according to the Minister of Health.

The state of health emergency will last three months in Peru. Sign of concern caused by the upsurge “unusual” cases of Guillain-Barré in the country. The last report from the Peruvian Ministry of HealthMonday, July 10, reports four deaths and 180 cases reported since January.

This rare syndrome is a neurological condition, also called acute polyradiculoneuritis, which is characterized by progressive muscle weakness that occurs over two to four weeks and can affect the respiratory system. Tingling sensations and lack of strength in the fingers of the hands and feet are among the most common early symptoms.

“There has been a significant increase in recent weeks that requires us to take action at the state level to protect the health and life of the population”said the Minister of Health. The 33 million inhabitants of this Latin American country are therefore put under glass for 90 days to try to stem this disease.
