Peru ‘definitively’ recalls its ambassador to Mexico

(Lima) Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced on Friday the “final recall” of her ambassador to Mexico, citing the Mexican head of state’s support for deposed Peruvian President Pedro Castillo.

Mme Boluarte, who succeeded Mr. Castillo after the latter’s arrest on December 7, denounced the “unacceptable” interference by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Peruvian “internal affairs”.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have now been downgraded to the level of charges d’affaires, said Mr.me Bolarte.

Peru had already expelled the Mexican ambassador to Lima at the end of December, after that country had granted political asylum to Mr. Castillo’s wife and two sons.

The Mexican head of state, from the left like Pedro Castillo, said on Friday that he wanted to “continue to support the unjustly deposed president”.

Mr. Castillo is accused of having attempted a coup d’etat by wanting to dissolve the Parliament which was about to oust him from power.

His dismissal and arrest sparked two months of protests across the country, in which at least 48 civilians and a member of the security forces died.
