In an interview, Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his desire to demographically “rearmament” France. A pronatalist speech which has sparked numerous criticisms, notably asserting that the president reduces women to their procreative function.

Laetitia Bernard, 27, is one of the thousands of women in France who have chosen not to become a mother. Her non-desire to have children has existed for a long time, she explains. She made the decision to be sterilized, to put an end to restrictive contraception and the anxiety of getting pregnant. A choice that leaves no doubt. “I feel it anchored in me. I don’t have this desire at all, this maternal fiber. I don’t want to find myself pregnant at all. I don’t want to have a child to take care of”explains Laetitia Bernard.

30% of women do not want children

After four years of searching, the young woman found a doctor who agreed to operate on her on social networks. Before that, she had to face refusal from four gynecologists. “I felt judged”, she regrets. However, voluntary sterilization has been legal since 2001. The only condition is to be over 18 and to respect a four-month reflection period. According to a 2022 survey, 30% of women of childbearing age do not want to have children.
