(Quebec) The head of the Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit (UPAC), Frédérick Gaudreau, is leaving his post before the end of his mandate to become associate deputy minister at the Ministry of Public Security.
The Council of Ministers made this appointment during its weekly meeting on Wednesday. Mr. Gaudreau will take up his duties at the Ministry on September 3.
Frédérick Gaudreau was appointed Commissioner for the Fight against Corruption – and therefore the head of UPAC – by the National Assembly on October 8, 2019. His term was seven years and was therefore due to end in the fall of 2026.
Mr. Gaudreau succeeded Robert Lafrenière, who announced his resignation on the very day of the general elections, on 1er October 2018. He had then become interim commissioner of UPAC – of which he had recently been number 2. He had a career at the Sûreté du Québec from 1997 to 2017.
A process will be initiated by the Legault government to find a new boss for UPAC. A vote in the National Assembly and the agreement of two-thirds of the deputies are required to appoint him.
