We are the first European country to recognize in law that menstrual health is a women’s right”. In Spain, the Minister for Equality expressed her desire to introduce menstrual leave.

On May 17, Irene Montero, Minister for Equality, spoke about the bill that provides for the introduction of menstrual leave in Spain: “All women who need it will be able to benefit from this menstrual leave if they have disabling menstrual pain.”

“We are the first European country to recognize rights such as work stoppages for disabling menstrual pain and to combat menstrual poverty” added the Minister.

The bill also provides “to provide menstrual hygiene products in schools, penitentiary centers and centers dedicated to social services”.

Irene Montero hopes to break the taboo that surrounds menstruation, especially in certain professional circles.

If this is a first in Europe, some countries in the world, such as Japan and South Korea, have already implemented this type of law.
