Performing arts: a summer program under the sign of diversity

This text is part of the special section C’est l’été

End-of-season shows and summer festivals follow one another at a frantic pace. Here is a small, eclectic selection, but far from exhaustive.

International Theater Crossroads

High mass celebrating theater and dance in Quebec, the Carrefour international de théâtre brings together for its 23e publishing a fine line-up of artists. This is Marie Gignac’s last program as artistic director of the festival. Ten shows — three of which are international — will take the stage by storm, in addition to satellite activities and artistic workshops. The event was launched with Until we die, by Brigitte Poupart (until May 28). This immersive creation, which embraces the codes of ambulatory theater, brings together 12 performers from the circus, theater and dance. The cast appropriates a story of the end of the world told in reverse. The theatrical route Where do you go when you sleep while walking… ? will be back at Parc des Moulins in Charlesbourg for the duration of the event. Through five paintings belonging to a unique narrative universe, artists from various disciplines explore the themes of uprooting, resistance, effervescence, the absurd and female resilience.

Until June 10.

National Circus School graduate show

As for La Tohu, in Montreal, the end of the season traditionally gives way to the next generation of circuses. Indeed, the National Circus School honors its different cohorts, whether they are at the beginning or at the end of their career. Both an educational exercise and a first showcase for many, these shows are an opportunity to discover the prowess of the artists of tomorrow. The graduates of the School will present the show Parries from 1er June, a production by Marie-Josée Gauthier in which all the artists on stage took part, from creation to conception.

Until June 10.

Mask then!

The mask, object par excellence of the arts, is the main character of this festival which is in its 8e edition in the town of Sainte-Camille, in Estrie. Through multidisciplinary shows, conferences, exhibitions, training and community activities, the mask is celebrated in all its forms during this unique event of its kind in North America. 1er june will be presented the show Gesichter Geschichten… Stories of faces by Horta Van Hoye, an artist of Belgian origin established in Quebec. This one will give life on stage to multiple characters of recycled paper which are transformed on stage into magnificent works. An “off festival” will take place on May 27 in Saint-Adrien and May 28 in Val-des-Sources.

From May 27 to June 4.

DANCEAgain

For his 29e edition, the DANSEncore international festival in Trois-Rivières is rooted in a desire to develop its audience and meet different sensibilities. The proposal for four performers by choreographer Véronique Giasson is a fine example. The latter will take possession of the premises of the Maison de la culture for a residence. Subsequently, the general rehearsal of its creation RESET2 will be open to the public, which will allow you to discover behind the scenes and discuss the process before the full performance on June 9. The second indoor event will be the Gala (June 9 and 10), a major celebration for which several companies have been invited to present an original creation. The styles of the paintings come from modern ballet, contemporary, percussive dance as well as social dance. An important place will be given to the next generation with the presence of some sixty young artists from all over Quebec. The festival also offers a rich free outdoor program.

From June 7 to 11.

Islands Circus Festival

We will never stop rehashing our love for the Magdalen Islands. People who will be there on vacation will have the chance to attend this circus festival in the heart of the archipelago, in Cap-aux-Meules. Several Canadian troupes will shine for six evenings with three major creations drawing on the theme of homecoming. Moreover, the Magdalen troupe Vague de cirque is making a great return home after seven years of absence and international adventures. She will present Short-livedan exercise placed under the sign of temerity.

From July 20 to 25.

FURIES

For his 4e edition, the Marsoui contemporary dance festival offers a rich program responding to feminist, inclusive, eco-responsible and decolonial values. Group pieces will be honored in this event which brings together more than 60 artists, some of whom will set foot for the first time in the magnificent Haute-Gaspésie region. shipment will be given. Sandrine Dagenais-Savard and Catherine Masse will present corn cobs, which will immerse the public in the songs and dances of their Wendat nation and their cousin nation, the Haudenausanee nation. Paul Chambers will invite us to navigate through his light installation PHOSPHOS. For her part, Élise Legrand will unveil a civic creation, the result of a meeting with members of the Marsoui community. There will also be creations by Anne Thériault, Lara Kramer, Kim-Sanh Châu and Alexandra “Spicey” Landé. To close this beautiful celebration, we will be entitled to a collaboration between Safia Nolin (music) and Maryse Goudreau (visual arts and performance), who will present Forest firean ode to nature and the living.

From July 27 to 30.

Not forgetting the humor

Rain or shine, laughter is always a good therapy to indulge in without restraint. While waiting for the Just for Laughs and Zoofest festivals to take over the boards and outdoor sites in July and make you forget the collective gloom, you can see some local artists who are currently finishing their tour. Among them, the sparkling and ex-Grande Crue Ève Côté, who hones her storytelling skills in a first solo show to discover until June 17 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Eustache and Magog.
