“Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace”, Shabaka

Be careful, the Musical Health Organization (WHO) is reportedly on the verge of declaring a flute pandemic. After the publication in November of the atmospheric New Blue Sun by André 3000, rapper converted into flautist, Shabaka Hutchings, star of the new British jazz scene, abandons the brass for the winds on his first solo album. Less new age than that of André 3000, but also inspired by the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders, the album conceals invigorating ideas, articulated by the agile and complex instrumentalist, around whom gathers a collection of talents: the harpist Brandee Younger, emulator of Alice Coltrane, the singer Moses Sumney (on the poignant Insecurities), the poet Saul Williams, the brilliant bassist Esperanza Spalding, the percussionist Carlos Niño, director of New Blue Sun — and, well, André 3000 on hypnotics I’ll Do Whatever You Want, to which Floating Points also collaborates. A mystical and refined album which will live on the Gesù stage on July 6, on the FIJM bill.
