This Thursday, June 6, 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. The opportunity to commemorate the numerous civilian victims that occurred at this time.

Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on Wednesday June 5, 2024 in Saint-Lô (Manche), the martyr town of the Allied Landing of June 6, 1944, to the civilian victims of the bombings. “It’s a memory that was quite hindered for several decades since 1944. These are people who suffered a lot from being a little out of step because they were victims. It was something impossible compared to these liberators who were not exactly heroes to them, since they had also killed their family and destroyed their house”explains François-Guillaume Lorrain, historian and journalist at Point.

In his speech, the Head of State notably returned to the fate of these civilians and the destruction linked to the bombings. “It’s a very elderly population so it had to be done now. It was the last time. These are people who actually felt a little forgotten for 80 years by the Nation (…) It needs to heal the wounds, to reconcile souls and spirits”adds the historian.
