An extremely heavy toll from nearly five months of conflict. More than “25,000” Palestinian women and children have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, said the American Secretary of State for Defense, Lloyd Austin, Thursday February 29.

“It’s more than 25,000”, declared the head of the Pentagon before a parliamentary committee, in response to a question on the toll of women and children killed in the war between Israel and Hamas. The Hamas-administered Gaza Health Ministry earlier announced that “more than 30,000” people had been killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza since October 7.

That day, the Palestinian Islamist movement launched an unprecedented attack in Israel which left at least 1,160 dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data. In retaliation, Israel vowed to annihilate Hamas, which it considers, along with the United States and the European Union, to be a terrorist organization.
