Pensions, nuclear, private jets, abortion… What to remember from the interview with Julien Bayou

Julien Bayou, deputy Europe Ecology Les Verts (EELV) from Paris, was the guest of “8:30 am franceinfo”, Friday March 10, 2023. Pensions, nuclear, private jets, abortion … He answered questions from Lorrain Sénéchal and Hadrien Bect .

Pensions: “We can win!”

Julien Bayou is convinced of winning the fight against the government’s pension reform: “We can win. I call on as many people as possible to take part in the demonstrations tomorrow”did he declare. “We can win, we must win. The challenge is to avoid stealing two years of life from people”, he added. Two new days of mobilization are scheduled for March 11 and 15. Tuesday, March 7, the day of strike had mobilized 1.28 million demonstrators in France, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior.

While targeted power cuts are organized locally by strikers, the Green MP said he understood that some strikers are “reduced to having to do more because it is the government that brutalizes”. “This reform is unfair, it is unjustified and during this time, we are not dealing with the major issues of climate change or inflation”, he explained. Julien Bayou is calling “to continue the mobilization”because “doubt is seizing the majority”he assured.

Cracks in nuclear power plants: “There is a problem with the sector”

Two new cracks were discovered in reactor 2 of the Penly nuclear power plant (Seine-Maritime) and reactor 3 of the Cattenom power plant (Moselle): “It’s a sign that there is a problem with the sector” nuclear, reacted Julien Bayou. “You discover cracks that don’t have to be. It’s a sign that you have to stop and take a look at what works and what can be a problem”he explained.

Emmanuel Macron announced in February in Belfort the construction of 14 additional nuclear reactors, eight of which are optional: “Betting our entire energy strategy on a technology that is expensive and of which we do not know if it works, I find that dogmatic”, he said. The MP claims that“No environmentalist is in favor of closing the power stations today. I would like it to be very clear. We have nothing to do with the fact that half of the power stations were shut down”he said.

Private jets: “It’s the simplest measure” for the climate

Julien Bayou wants to take advantage of the parliamentary niche of environmentalists on April 6 to put the ban on private jets on the agenda of the National Assembly. The objective is to “bring the rich back to earth” by making them contribute to the ecological transition. A proposal strongly criticized by the majority. Yet, according to him, “it is the simplest measure that produces the most immediate concrete effects for the climate”he explained. “You should know that it’s one in ten flights departing from France. It’s a question of consent to the transition. How do you want to tell people: ‘Make an effort on sobriety’, if the ultra- rich are exempted completely, you will not be able to embark the population”he explained.

Abortion in the Constitution: “Great news”

Emmanuel Macron wishes to enshrine the freedom of voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution: “This is great news in such a difficult time”greeted the deputy. “We see it with Poland, with Hungary, with the United States. We must protect this right, we must enshrine it in the Constitution”he insisted.
