To spend a little less in times of inflation, retirees have chosen to leave France for Morocco during the winter. Even with the rise in prices on the spot, their purchasing power is much higher than that which they have in France.

With 340 days of sunshine a year and ten degrees when it’s cold, the region of Agadir (Morocco) attracts the French. Some even spend the winter there. In his campsite in Imi Ouaddar, Jamal Immel knows everyone. “80% are French. This year is specific for the French. Fly away from you, the swallows are starting to come a little”, jokes the director of the campsite. Since 2008 and her retirement, Marie-Claude Breton has left Clermont-Ferrand for Morocco every winter. His 80 square meter mobile home with fittings cost him 60,000 euros.

On her terrace, she invites her friends. For her friend who comes from the Mâconnaise region, there is everything you need here. “The sun, the beach, girlfriends, the relationships we make, everything. You have to remember that in winter when you buy warm clothes in France, it costs more than shorts and t-shirts here. Flip-flops are cheaper than a pair of lined boots”, she confides. Marie-Claude Breton makes, between the heating, the expenses of the house, 170 euros of savings per month. And just for housing. Added to this are savings on food and catering. Only downside, the price of gasoline has increased significantly in the country lately, reaching more than one euro fifty per liter.
