Penguins | Sidney Crosby living with COVID-19

(Pittsburgh) The Pittsburgh Penguins subjected their star player Sidney Crosby and defenseman Brian Dumoulin to the NHL protocol regarding COVID-19 on Wednesday after they each tested positive for the virus.

Head coach Mike Sullivan said Crosby is experiencing mild symptoms, while Dumoulin is asymptomatic. Crosby’s positive diagnosis came less than a week after returning to play – he missed six games with surgery to his left wrist.

Even though most of the Penguins were vaccinated, they spent the first few days of the season battling the coronavirus. Crosby and Dumoulin are the seventh and eighth Penguins players to be subject to league protocol since training camp opened in September.

Defenders Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel also signed on to the protocol on Monday. Forwards Jeff Carter, Jack Guentzel and Zach Aston-Reese, as well as star defenseman Kristopher Letang have also had positive diagnoses.

Carter, Guentzel and Aston-Reese are already back in the game, however. Letang, who was asymptomatic, took part in his team’s training on Monday.

The Penguins (3-3-2) will complete an eight-game home stint when they face the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday and the Minnesota Wild on Sunday.
