Penguins end marathon

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been up late, but they can celebrate as they defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 in the third period of overtime Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in Game 1 of their first-round series.

Evgeni Malkin is the one who ended this match which lasted more than 105 minutes. Placed in front of goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin’s net, the Russian striker redirected a shot from John Marino from the blue line.

It was the second point of the game for Malkin, who was also an accomplice to the net of Bryan Rust, on the power play in the second period. Rust was also the most productive skater, with three points. He had also amassed assists on the two nets of Jake Guentzel, just like Sidney Crosby.

In addition, the victory went to the file of Louis Domingue, who arrived as reinforcements for Casey DeSmith during the second overtime period, the latter being visibly inconvenienced. Domingue thus blocked the 17 pucks sent in his direction, while DeSmith yielded three times on 51 shots.

At the other end of the ice, Igor Shesterkin will not have much to reproach himself for, he who made an impressive total of 79 parades.

Goal disallowed

A disallowed goal caught the eye late in the third period. Kaapo Kakko first outflanked defender Brian Dumoulin, before coming in front of DeSmith. In his maneuver, the Finn collided at the same time as he hit Dumoulin, in defensive withdrawals.

On the sequence, Filip Chytil took advantage of the chaos to grab the puck and push it into a gaping cage. The video review, however, determined that the goal was not good, thus preserving the equality of 3 to 3.

The two teams will continue this series on Thursday, still in New York, before heading to Pennsylvania.
