Penguins and Kasperi Kapanen avoid arbitration

(Pittsburgh) The Pittsburgh Penguins have offered Finnish forward Kasperi Kapanen a two-year, $6.4 million contract extension, general manager Ron Hextall announced Thursday.

The six-foot-one, 194-pound hockey player had 11 goals and 21 assists in 79 games last season with the Penguins. He surpassed the 30-point mark for the fourth season in a row, setting personal highs in terms of games played, power play points (5) and hits (110).

The 25-year-old was the first choice, 22e in total, from the Penguins in the 2014 NHL Draft, before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel. The Penguins repatriated him on August 20, 2020.

Kapanen has 63 goals and 89 assists in 321 career regular season games with the Penguins and Maple Leafs. He also had 13 points (5-8) in 38 playoff games.
