Pedestrian Safety | “There are too many cars, they are too big and they drive too fast”, says Valérie Plante

The mayoress of Montreal said on Friday that she wanted to speed up the introduction of traffic calming measures in the city center, in the wake of the death of little Mariia, in mid-December.

Three sections of streets will become one-way by next September in Centre-Sud, including the one where the fatal accident occurred, announced Mr.me Plant. Objective: to put “safety before fluidity”.

“This is just the beginning for the neighborhood,” said the mayor, who is also mayor of the borough of Ville-Marie. “We want to be able to secure the whole of the Centre-South. »

A citizen interrupted the municipal administration’s press conference for a long time, shouting that the measures announced were too timid, that his son lived in fear of being killed while walking and that cars should be banned from central districts.

Mme Plante defended the results of his first five years at the helm of the borough. “We put several speed bumps on several streets, […] we started to put projections [de trottoir] whereas before it was not envisaged, we closed a street between two streets, ”she said. “Now, can we go faster and further? The answer is yes. »

The mayor expressed regret at the latest statistics published by police forces, which confirm that 2022 has been a dark year for pedestrians in Greater Montreal. “The reasons for this increase in collisions, including fatal collisions, are clear: there are too many cars, they are too big and they drive too fast,” she said.

New one-way streets in Centre-Sud: rue Fullum, north, between rue Ontario and rue Sherbrooke; rue Parthenais, towards the north, between rue De Rouen and rue Sherbrooke; rue de Rouen, towards the east, between rue Fullum and rue D’Iberville.
