A 28-year-old motorist suspected of fatally hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk Friday evening in Drummondville was released by the police.

“The suspect was finally released pending further procedures,” said Catherine Bernard, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), without however being able to specify the reasons behind this decision.
The young man therefore did not appear in court to face charges, said Sergeant Bernard. Where applicable, The newspaper won’t name him yet. The police investigation continues.
It has nevertheless been confirmed that the victim in this case is Jean-François Larivière, a 50-year-old man from Drummondville, in Centre-du-Québec.
He was crossing rue des Écoles in the company of another person when he was hit by a car speeding south, around 8:35 p.m. near rue Hervé Tessier, not far from the Sainte-Croix hospital, reported the SQ.
No speed
The pedestrian was seriously injured and was in critical condition late in the evening. His death was later confirmed by authorities.
The person next to him was not hit or injured.
The violent collision occurred in a location with no specific signs for motorists or pedestrians. Speed would not be a factor either, believes the provincial police.
The suspect in this case was arrested shortly after the crash and failed an alcohol test.
According to research carried out by The newspaperhe has several dozen files for violations of the Highway Safety Code and related to municipal regulations, including speeding and cell phone while driving.
