Peas with Jacky Mercier

Peas, a green vegetable very popular with the French. You can grow it in your garden. Here are some tips from Jacky Mercier, market gardener in Frontenay sur Dive:

When to sow peas?

In January, it is the ideal period because the pea does not like the heat: it prefers the cold.

Which varieties to choose?

The Merveille de Kelvedon (which is sweeter) or the Douce Provence or the Alberman pea (small rowing peas, climbing poles and string are necessary).

In what land?

Dry soil because if it is too wet it will make mud and the pea plant will rot. A cold earth is more suitable.

Should you prepare your seeds?

Yes (but it is not mandatory) Remember to refrigerate them or even freeze them for 48 hours. The cold will cause stress and thermal shock with the earth. The peas will germinate faster.

How to sow the seeds?

Dig 4/5 cm furrows. Sow several seeds every 30 cm and cover well with soil to prevent birds from pecking them.

How long between sowing and harvesting?

3/4 months approximately.
