Iranian photographer Reza is at the microphone of All Public to talk about the conflict shaking the Middle East, with new attacks from Iran. Anyone who has followed the successive wars in the region for around forty years sees the increasing control in the region of the Islamic regime as what led to the attack of October 7, 2023, and to the current situation. . “It was obvious to everyone that at one point, it was going to set the region ablaze. Unfortunately, [nous arrivons au] moment that many people hoped would not happen.”he regrets.
Despite the escalation of violence between Israel, Iran and their neighbors, Reza does not lack hope, particularly concerning the loss of influence of religious power over Iranians: “80% of Iranian women today are no longer in line with religion. And there are an incredible number of young Iranians who have become atheists”he rejoices. But where the photographer has the most hope is in photography. “Photographs (…) have an extraordinary effect on the mentality of human beings. Photography changes the way we look at the world.” Images, he is convinced, are vectors of change, and allow us to “preparing the future of humanity.”
The new movie Joker is transformed into a musical, where singer and actress Lady Gaga joins Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn. The first film having had a resounding success (Golden Lion in Venice, Oscar for best actor, etc.), Joaquin Phoenix tells how he approached his return to this flagship role: “The biggest challenge for me with this sequel was consciously forgetting my memories of the first”he explains. That doesn’t take away from the fact that the actor couldn’t wait to get back into the character’s skin: “For me, The Joker was a great experience and I wanted to experience it again”he confides.
Director Todd Phillips talks about what pushed him to make this second film a musical. He explains that the Joker “always had music in him”he recalls, alluding to the few singing scenes in the first film. The trigger would be the meeting between the Joker and Harley Quinn: “If you have music in you and you’re raised without love, when you find love, maybe that music will come out.”considers the filmmaker.
Lady Gaga also shares how she had to work on her voice to match the character of Lee, aka Harley Quinn: “I mainly worked to erase the technical aspects of my voice or my singing tricks (…).”
“That was clearly the biggest challenge in making this film: changing my voice.”
