Patrick Roy hired by the Islanders

More than seven years after his departure from the Colorado Avalanche, Patrick Roy is back behind a National League bench.


The New York Islanders announced the hiring of Roy as head coach Saturday afternoon, replacing the fired Lane Lambert.

This will be Roy’s second tenure in the NHL, following his three years at the helm of the Avalanche from 2013 to 2016. He had a record of 130-92-24 and won the Jack Trophy. Adams in 2013-14 as NHL Coach of the Year.

The Islanders have lost four straight and six of their last seven games. The team is not in position to make the playoffs at this time.

Lambert was midway through his second season with the team.

Last season, Roy won the Memorial Cup and the Gilles-Courteau Trophy at the helm of the Quebec Remparts. During his 13 seasons with the Remparts, Roy accumulated a head coaching record of 524-255-66.
