Morocco has partially lifted the restrictions imposed since the end of November on air links. Flights to Morocco remain impossible except from three countries: Portugal, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. “In order to allow the return to Morocco of Moroccan citizens who actually reside in the Kingdom and who have been blocked following the suspension of flights, the Moroccan authorities will authorize, on an exceptional basis, passenger flights”, indicates a press release from the interministerial committee responsible for anti-Covid monitoring.

According to the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), the travel costs are the responsibility of the beneficiaries and a very strict health protocol is imposed. A PCR test of less than 48 hours is requested. On arrival, passengers will be confined for seven days in dedicated hotels at the expense of the Moroccan government. Travelers will undergo a PCR test every 48 hours, any positive person will be taken care of by health authorities.

No explanation is given on the reasons for this list limited to three countries. A meeting is scheduled to clarify the situation. The 360 website summarizes the essential points: “Could a Moroccan stranded in Spain or France be repatriated if he has the possibility of making the trip to Portugal?”, and so on for Turkey or the Emirates. The authorization is intended for Moroccans “who have recently left the national territory”, but since when precisely?

Especially since Morocco has also suspended maritime passenger transport. Only vehicles carrying goods are allowed to enter the territory. The Moroccan press also ensures that the restrictions on air links from Morocco will be lifted very soon, without being able to give a date. Special flights that the national airline, Royal Air Maroc, confirms to schedule from Morocco.

According to the Moroccan Ministry of Health, the epidemiological situation has stabilized, with low transmission of the virus for more than five weeks. However, tourism professionals are alarmed by the devastating impact of the closing of borders on this vital sector for the kingdom’s economy, already undermined by an unprecedented crisis for almost two years. Once again Morocco will be absent from tourist destinations at a crucial time for the sector.
