The building collapsed for an unknown reason. One person was killed in the partial collapse of a bridge on Sunday July 23 in Patras, western Greece, a Greek police spokesman told AFP.

The ANA news agency and the public broadcaster ERT, citing the ambulance services, said there were four injured, transferred to two hospitals in the city. A large-scale rescue operation is underway with firefighters and ambulances on site, in difficult conditions, while the country is hit by an exceptional heat wave.

The work is located on the road that connects the port of Patras, in the Peloponnese peninsula, to Athens. According to Efthymis Lekkas, the president of the Earthquake Protection Organization, quoted by the ERT channel, the bridge had stability problems which were known to the authorities. Restoration work began in 2021 at a cost of more than six million euros, according to ERT.
