On Sunday January 2, 2022, the South African Parliament, a place symbolic of the end of Apartheid in the country, went up in smoke. No casualties are to be deplored and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
In Cape Town (South Africa), it is a symbol of the end of Apartheid which was eaten up by the flames of a fire. South Africa’s parliament partially collapsed, giving rise to some spectacular footage. The enclosure of the National Assembly of the country where the deputies sit has been completely destroyed. “The roof of the building collapsed on one side and fire spread over the new assembly. Firefighters have detected large cracks in the wall and this worries us a lot“, explains Jean-Pierre Smith, the head of security in Cape Town.
For the time being, no casualties are to be deplored and the origin of the fire is still unknown. “This fire will of course be investigated. A person has just been arrested, he is being questioned“said Cyril Ramaphosa, the country’s president. The 51-year-old will appear in court on Tuesday. It is precisely here that the main stages of the end of apartheid took place, culminating in Nelson Mandela’s investiture ceremony on May 9, 1994. At the time, outgoing President Frederik de Klerk entered the Chamber alongside the new President.
