Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico hospitalized “in serious condition” after falling from a horse

Big concern for Sergio Rico. The goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, understudy of the Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma in the goals of the Parisian club, is “in serious condition” announced a spokesperson for PSG to AFP, Sunday, May 28.

Sergio Rico fell from his horse in circumstances that remain to be clarified. Aged 29, he took part on the bench in his training match the day before in Strasbourg, during which Paris gleaned its 11th league title. The Sevilla native suffered “a horse accident in Andalusia“a Paris Saint-Germain spokesperson confirmed to Agence France-Presse, without giving further details on the player’s injuries or the circumstances of the accident.

“Sergio was on his way to mass when he suffered an accident with a carriage and a horse that kicked him”explains for its part the agency which represents the player, in a press release shared on behalf of the family on social networks. “Sergio is in the best hands, he is struggling to recover […] We are awaiting results on his medical evolution, which we hope will be favorable.”they add, specifying that a lot of caution must be exercised in the next 48 hours.

Rico arrived at PSG in the summer of 2019 for a loan with an option to buy, which was activated a few months later. Promising in his debut at Sevilla FC, until being part of the Spanish selection for Euro 2016, the goalkeeper has played a substitute role since signing for the Parisian club. Rico has successively been overtaken in the rotation of goalkeepers by Keylor Navas, then by “Gigi” Donnarumma since the arrival of the Italian international in Paris in 2021. Sometimes a starter for cup matches, Sergio Rico has played 24 games with PSG , and had been loaned for the second half of the 2021-2022 season to Mallorca.
