Paris saga: the Gaumont Palace

From 1911 to 1973, the Gaumont Palace was the Eldorado of Parisians, all lovers of cinema, first silent, then speaking.

To accompany films by Charlot, Laurel and Hardy or Max Linder, the Gaumont Palace has an orchestra of 30 musicians and in 1931, a giant “Christie’s” brand organ was installed there, miraculously saved from demolition in 1973 and now installed in the Pavillon Baltard in Nogent sur Marne.

The Gaumont Palace was more than a cinema. And often, the cinema let place in the music hall.

As for cinema films, the highlight of the show, they were preceded by newsa kind of TV news before the hour, then an attraction, clowns, trapeze artists, singers, comedians… Then the intermission allowed the Gaumont ushers to sell ice cream, popcorn, sweets, while on the screen were shown the advertisements of the famous little miner. Nostalgia when you hold us !

With the arrival of cinema complexes, single-screen rooms are disappearing. The Gaumont Palace draws the curtain in April 1972 after the final broadcast of a Cowboys film with the essential John Wayne. Developers began demolition in early 1973. Instead of the Gaumont Palace, there was now a less glamorous hotel and a DIY store.
