Paris Olympics: Félix Auger-Aliassime reaches quarter-finals by defeating Daniil Medvedev

Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime reached the quarter-finals of the men’s singles tournament at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Auger-Aliassime, 13e seeded, defeated No. 4 Neutral Individual Athlete Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 7-6 (5), in a third-round matchup.

It took him an hour and 38 minutes to get there. Auger-Aliassime defeated Medvedev for the first time in their eighth career meeting – but their first on clay.

In the next round, Auger-Aliassime will play the winner of the duel between sixth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud and Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.

Auger-Aliassime lost in the first round at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

On Wednesday, he was served by a good return game. The 23-year-old Quebecer also continued to shine on serve, not allowing any break points to his rival in a third straight match.

Auger-Aliassime was also scheduled to play in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles alongside Ontario’s Gabriela Dabrowski. They have a date with Americans and third seeds Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff.

In women’s doubles, Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez and Dabrowski, seeded fifth, were eliminated in the second round. They lost 6-4, 6-0 to Neutral Individual Athletes Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.

More details to come.
