Paris Olympics: Canadian women’s football team wins first match of tournament

The Canadian women’s soccer team won its first match of the Olympic tournament on Thursday, defeating New Zealand by a score of 2-1.

It was a goal from Quebec’s Évelyne Viens at the end of the second half that allowed the Canadians to win.

The Canadian women’s soccer team is in turmoil after a team member was caught using a drone to film New Zealand’s training session.

Joseph Lombardi, an “unaccredited” analyst for the Canadian women’s soccer team, was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence for the act.

The Canadian Olympic Committee ordered him to return to Canada. Jasmine Mander, an assistant coach to whom Lombardi reported, received the same order.

Coach Bev Priestman voluntarily withdrew from this first match of the Olympic tournament.

More details will follow.
