Canadian Skylar Park won the bronze medal in women’s taekwondo in the under 57 kilograms category on Thursday at the Paris Olympics.
Park defeated Lebanon’s Laetitia Aoun 2-0 to win Canada’s first taekwondo medal since Karine Sergerie won silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Park qualified for the bronze medal match with a 2-0 win over Turkey’s Hatice Kubra Ilgan 2-0 in the repechage.
The 25-year-old from Winnipeg wouldn’t have been able to do it, however, if her quarter-final opponent, South Korea’s Kim Yujin, hadn’t reached the final.
Park lost to Kim, but because the latter upset tournament favourite Luo Zongshi of China in the semifinals, the Canadian had a chance to get back into medal contention.
The representative of the Unifolié began her tournament by beating the Czech Dominika Hronova 2-0 in the round of 16, at the Grand Palais.
Park is ranked third in the world in her weight class. She was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the Tokyo Games three years ago..
