What response should we give to the riots that shook France at the beginning of the summer? Élisabeth Borne must announce measures, Thursday, October 26, alongside other ministers: Gérald Darmanin, on the security aspect, Éric Dupont-Moretti on the judicial aspect, Aurore Bergé concerning the role of parents and Jean-Noël Barrot on that of social networks. In Montreuil, the city center was ransacked during the urban riots which followed Nahel’s death in early July. Since the start of the school year, the town hall has set up a series of parenting support workshops.

Supporting sometimes overwhelmed parents

In the working-class district of La Noue, there are around twenty of them, the vast majority of them women, around a psychologist. They exchange their experiences as parents, notably Amal, who has a 15-year-old teenager. “The generation of young people with the internet is hard. My son said to me: ‘why go to school? There is a person who created a YouTube channel and who is a billionaire, why do I have to work? ‘”says the mother.

For Ratiba, it is with the younger daughter that the situation is complicated. “I have three children with three different characters, including one who is the rebel of the family”. She leaves the workshop with ideas. “There are quite a few parameters that come into play and that allows us to think. I tell myself that perhaps, in what I bring to my children, I can change something so that it is more fluid and with less tensionshe assures.

“Every time the child does something stupid, the parents often feel helpless and no longer know what to do.”

Konaté Hamaye, director of the Lea association, a place of listening and welcome, above all wants to relieve these parents of guilt. “Yes, there is suffering because in the family, the parents put everything in place so that the child can stay within a framework and respect the rules that are put in place”he notes. During the workshop, the riots were not directly discussed. In the neighborhood, many parents mobilized to try to calm tensions.
