(Paris) Canadian Shelby Newkirk won the bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter backstroke S6 final on Saturday at the Paris Paralympic Games.
The Saskatoon swimmer reached the finish line with a time of 1:22.24.
China’s Yuyan Jiang took the top step of the podium with a world record of 1:19.44.
American Ellie Marks, who was the previous world record holder, took the silver medal.
Newkirk finished fourth in the women’s 50-metre freestyle in Paris and was part of the Canadian team that placed eighth in the mixed 4×100-metre medley relay.
The 28-year-old swimmer was diagnosed with dystonia at the age of 13 after her right foot began to cramp and spasm uncontrollably. The condition, which affects her movement, balance and coordination, has caused Newkirk to lose the use of her right foot.
