(Charlotte) Baker Mayfield will be the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback for their season opener, Sept. 11, against his former club, the Cleveland Browns.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule made the announcement on the team’s website Monday.
Mayfield, acquired by trade from the Browns earlier this year, edged out 2021 season starter Sam Darnold for the job. The news comes as no surprise: Mayfield has been better than Darnold throughout camp.
Both quarterbacks are scheduled to play in the Panthers’ final preseason game on Friday against the Buffalo Bills. Neither Mayfield nor Darnold saw much action during the preseason schedule.
