>> Iran: five questions on the suspicious death of Mahsa Amini, which sets the country ablaze

Several hundred students were protesting against the murder of Mahsa Amini and the arrest of students arrested during the recent demonstrations, sparked on September 16 by the death of the 22-year-old young woman, arrested three days earlier by the morality police in Tehran for violating the strict dress code which notably obliges women to wear the veil.

The scene took place in the heart of the most prestigious scientific university in Iran, also known for its spirit of resistance. Face-to-face classes have been suspended from Monday. “Sharif University of Technology has announced that due to recent events and the need to protect students (…), all classes will be held virtually from Monday“, according to the Mehr news agency.

According to a witness, quoted by the independent news site Iran Wire, students were beaten, others were fired upon when police forces entered and cordoned off the building, armed with paintballs, gas tear gas and shotguns. Several young people were injured. To calm the situation, the Minister of Science came to the university and began a dialogue with the students and the forces stationed around the establishment. If some of the students were then able to leave the university, others remained stuck inside. Witnesses testify to having seen the arrests of several dozen students, as well as teachers: videos circulate showing young people, black hoods on their heads, embarked in police vans.
