Pamela Ware won a second gold medal in Santiago, this time on the 3m springboard. The Greenfield Park athlete was first in the provisional ranking in each of the five rounds.
“I saw the scores before the last dive and I knew that less than 3 points separated us (from Mexican Arantxa Chavez). When I entered the water on my last dive, I thought I had gone a little over vertical, but eventually, when I came out of the water, everyone was screaming loudly. I heard the scores and I was really happy,” admitted the 30-year-old athlete, whose last jump was her best of the competition with 72.00 points.
Mia Vallée placed sixth.
On Wednesday, on the last day of the diving competitions, Ware and Vallée will team up in the 3m synchro event. Ware could have a perfect stay in the Chilean capital if she tops the podium for a third time.
Rowing
The women’s eight is on the Pan American Games program for the very first time in history and it was the Canadian team which had the honor Tuesday of winning the very first gold medal in this event at the Games.
Quebecer Alizée Brien and her teammates Kristen Kit, Leia Till, Abby Dent, Shaye De Paiva, Abby Speirs, Parker Illingworth, Olivia McMurray and Kendra Hartley beat the Americans by 3.47 seconds. The Chileans reached the third step of the podium.
Brien will be back in action on Wednesday alongside Shaye De Paiva in the double sculls final.
Racquetball
Samuel Murray and his teammate Coby Iwaasa won the silver medal in the men’s doubles on Tuesday.
A few unfortunate exchanges tipped the scales towards the Mexicans Rodrigo Montoya and Javier Mar in the grand final, who defended their Pan American Games title acquired in Lima in 2019.
Murray and Iwaasa won the first set 11-6, then their opponents responded by running away with the next set 11-7. The last two sets were particularly close and ended 12-10, depriving the Canadians of the gold medal. Everything seemed to be smiling for the representatives of Mexico at certain moments, while many of their shots left no room for maneuver for the players of the maple leaf.
“It’s high level. I don’t think we played badly! They were clutch and they played well at the right time. It is a team of experts who are reigning champions. They risked a little more than us in the match and it paid off,” commented Samuel Murray after the match.
Coach Michel Gagnon was proud of the performance of his protégés.
“Today the difference wasn’t huge. A blow or two and everything could go our way. The guys were ready, they gave their all and a silver medal is great! »
Samuel Murray and Coby Iwaasa will wrap up the Pan American Games on Wednesday in the team tournament. Frédérique Lambert and Michèle Morissette will also be in action.
Track cycling
Emy Savard Sarah Orban and Jacklynn Boyle won the team sprint bronze medal final against the Colombian team. The Canadians stopped the clock at 49,110 s, a little more than half a second faster than their opponents (49,670 s).
In the grand final, the Mexicans beat the Americans.
Canadians Tyler Rorke, Nicholas Wammes and James Hedgcock beat the Colombians in the men’s final for the gold medal.
Swimming
Mary-Sophie Harvey continued her dream week at the Pan American Games by adding a bronze medal in the 4x200m relay alongside Katerine Savard.
The Canadians put up a fierce fight against the Americans and Brazilians during the 800m of the race. The three countries exchanged leads in the first 400 meters before the Americans managed to take a lead at the halfway mark.
“It wasn’t an easy test on this fourth day and we all felt it a little bit,” admitted Harvey. We still gave our 100% with the energy we had and the fact remains that we did a very good job getting on the podium. Every relay got on the podium, so that’s a big positive. »
The last Canadian runner, Katerine Savard gave everything to try to beat the Brazilian Gabrielle Roncatto, but in vain. This is Harvey’s fifth medal and Savard’s fourth since their arrival in Santiago.
“I saw 600m of the race and it was super close. I think that the four girls who swam, we can take away some positives and things to learn from this race,” Savard said.
Ontarian Julie Brousseau and New Brunswicker Brooklyn Douthwright were the other two Canadian swimmers in the final. A few minutes before taking part in the relay, Brousseau had won gold in the 400m individual medley, which impressed Savard.
“There was Julie and a girl from Brazil who swam the 400m and when they came into the call room for the relay all the girls applauded them, so it was a really nice moment. I hope they will remember it for a long time, because what they did was truly exceptional. »
As for Édouard Fullum-Huot, he swam in the B final of the 50m freestyle. The 20-year-old Montrealer stood out during this race by finishing in first place thanks to his time of 22.45 s.
The final swimming events will be contested on Wednesday. Harvey will be in the 200m medley and the 4x100m medley relay.
Boxing
Tammara Thibeault continued her quest for a gold medal at the Pan American Games by winning by unanimous decision of the judges in the quarter-final of the 75 kg draw against Venezuelan Maryelis Yriza.
All the judges handed out identical cards of 30-27 in favor of the Quebecer who will be back in action on Thursday in the semi-finals. A victory on Thursday would ensure Thibeault Olympic qualification for the Paris Games.
For his part, Montrealer Jérôme Feujio lost in the quarter-final of the over 92 kg category against Cuban Fernando Arzola by unanimous decision.
Handball
The Canadian women’s handball team lost its first match of the tournament.
23-14 against the Chilean team. In the defeat, Myriam Laplante and Laurie Lacasse both scored three goals.
“It’s a disappointment, because we thought we would be able to compete better against them,” admitted Vassilia Gagnon, captain of the Canadian team. “Our start to the match was slow and the crowd destabilized some of us.
