(Santiago, Chile) Ontarian Gunnar Holmgren won Canada’s first gold medal at the Pan American Games on Saturday by winning the mountain bike cross-country event.
Holmgren finished the event in 1:17:59. The 24-year-old athlete beat Chilean Martin Vidaurre by 53 seconds.
Jose Gabriel Marques de Almeida of Brazil conceded more than two minutes to Holmgren on the third step of the podium.
Holmgren took the lead in the third round of seven and stayed there until the end, on the course at the Catholic University Sports Club, located in the northeast of Santiago.
