Pan American Games | Canadian paddlers continue to rack up medals

(Santiago, Chile) Canadian paddlers continued their medal haul at the Pan American Games with one gold, one silver and two bronze on Saturday.


Katie Vincent and Sloan MacKenzie won the women’s C2 500 meters on Saturday in San Pedro de la Paz, southwest of Santiago, Chile.

Vincent, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, won an Olympic bronze medal with Laurence Vincent Lapointe in Tokyo just over two years ago, when women’s canoeing was first part of the Olympic program.

Canada finished the canoe-kayak competition with nine medals – four gold, two silver and three bronze – ahead of Argentina with seven medals, including two gold.

Nicholas Matveev, Pierre-Luc Poulin, Laurent Lavigne and Simon McTavish were silver medalists in the men’s K4 500 meters, behind Argentina.

Courtney Stott and Madeleine Schmidt won bronze in the women’s K2 500 meters. Connor Fitzpatrick was also a bronze medalist in the men’s C1 1000 meters.

Also on Saturday, Keegan Soehn and Rémi Aubin were silver medalists in men’s synchronized trampoline.

Canadians Brock Hoel, Emy Legault, Liam Donnelly and Dominka Jamnicky won bronze in the mixed team triathlon. The women’s softball team defeated Mexico 7-0 for bronze.

Canadian Philip Kim won gold in breaking to qualify for the Olympics.

The 26-year-old from Vancouver beat American Jeff Louis 3-0 in the final battle.

Breaking made its debut at the Pan American Games in Santiago. The sport will also appear as an Olympic competition during the next Games in Paris.

Canadian Ethan Katzberg won gold in the men’s hammer throw event. The 21-year-old from British Columbia set a Pan American Games record with a throw of 80.96 meters.

Also in athletics, Quebecer Jean-Simon Desgagnés won gold on Saturday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a time of eight minutes 30.14 seconds.

The Pan American Games end on Sunday.

With several events remaining on Saturday, Canada ranked third in total medals and fourth in gold, among the 34 countries in the Americas and Caribbean.
