The Palestinian authorities accused the Israeli army of having killed a young Palestinian in the occupied West Bank, on the sidelines of a march commemorating the forced exile of the Palestinians in 1948, Wednesday May 15. When contacted by AFP, the Israeli army did not immediately respond.
“A young man was killed by the occupier’s bullets [israélien] at the northern entrance to the town of al-Bireh”, which borders Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Witnesses told AFP that students from Bir-Zeit were gathering, a few hundred meters from the Israeli checkpoint installed at the entrance to al-Bireh, when Israeli soldiers opened fire.
According to AFP journalists, thousands of Palestinians marched on Wednesday in several West Bank towns to commemorate the “Nakba”, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians (hunted or driven by fear from their villages) which accompanied the creation of the State of Israel.
The West Bank has been the scene of an outbreak of violence for two years, further exacerbated by the deadly attack carried out by Hamas on October 7 and the Israeli offensive carried out in response in the Gaza Strip. At least 499 Palestinians have since been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the occupied West Bank. At least 20 people were killed on the Israeli side by Palestinians in the West Bank and in Israel during the same period.
