Pakistan is submerged, and the country’s great lakes threaten to swallow up several cities. With climate change, the inhabitants cannot fight against these floods.

A third of Pakistan is submerged, Wednesday, September 14. The houses barely emerge from the large bodies of water and the floods have been deadly. The situation could get even worse, since the dam which holds back the largest lake in the country threatens to give way at any moment. “When we look at the water level and this dam, our hearts stop. It’s not just water, it’s a bomb that could explode and engulf our homes at any moment.s,” said a Pakistani man.

In three months, a lake swallowed up several towns and canals were drilled in an attempt to relieve the pressure. Two lakes 160 km apart now meet, swallowing up several villages in the process. A total of 1.6 million buildings were destroyed. Residents try to flee. “There is water everywhere, I have two boats. But how do you want me to carry everyone“, asks a man. These millions of refugees are sleeping in tents. Pakistan had never experienced such floods caused by climate change.
