The oyster farming sector on the Ile de Ré (Charente-Maritime) is worried as the Christmas holidays approach. Fuels, packaging… Producers are faced with an increase in all their costs, which is likely to be passed on to consumers.

Due to the skyrocketing cost price, oysters are becoming more and more expensive. At an oyster producer on the Ile de Ré (Charente-Maritime), in one year, the price of plastic bags has jumped 30%, and his oyster tables have gone from 30 to 55 euros. And that’s not all. “We have a job where we need a lot of manpower, so wages are increasing”confides the producer.

Price of fuel, transport and even packaging for oysters… On average, production costs have increased by 20% this year. In October, the oyster farmer raised the price per dozen by 50 cents. A necessity to pay bills. As the holidays approach, negotiations with large retailers are underway, but professionals are already talking about an increase of 15% on average. To save money, the sector plans to invest in electric boats, to mechanize certain tasks or even to employ foreign labour.
