Among the expenses that weigh heavily on the daily life of the French, are those relating to the feeding of pets. But despite inflation, for most of you there is no question of reducing this budget.
In a pet store in the Paris suburbs, dogs are spoiled for choice when it comes to food. Dozens of different varieties, and prices rising by more than 2.14% in one year. So faced with this inflation, the owners say they are ready to make sacrifices, rather than to touch the habits of their animals. “I buy in larger quantities when there are promotions, because otherwise it’s still a budget”recognizes a customer. “I skip other things eventually, but I haven’t changed their habits”assures a woman.
France has 80 million pets, and each owner spends an average of 50 to 80 euros per month to feed them. Food is three-quarters of the budget. To maintain its customers despite everything, a store relies on promotions. If we do not touch the kibble reference, the savings are made elsewhere. “Customers may be buying a little less accessories than in the past”, says Jérémy Jarre, regional director of Animalerie Maxi Zoo. In France, the pet market is worth more than 5 billion euros.
