The former owner of the Mega Fitness Gym in Quebec Dan Marino died in 2022 of an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), i.e. a natural death, concludes the coroner Me Monique Tremblay in a report made public on Wednesday.
The 57-year-old man at the time of his death suffered from several health problems, including complications from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and anxiety disorders, the coroner’s report said. He had been hospitalized in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
On February 3, 2022, Mr. Marino was found dead at his mother’s home in Boischatel, near Quebec City. Cardiac resuscitation maneuvers had been attempted, without success. His death was declared on the spot.
A coroner’s inquest had been launched to shed light on this death, the causes of which remained unclear. Remember that Dan Marino has been known to the general public since the spring of 2021. Owner of the Mega Fitness Gym, he opposed health measures related to COVID-19. His gym had been at the heart of a major outbreak that had led to more than 500 positive cases, according to Public Health.
Heart attack
An autopsy performed the day after Mr. Marino’s death at the University Institute of Cardiology and Pneumology of Quebec established that the cause of death was a heart attack. According to the coroner’s report, the autopsy revealed “atherosclerotic disease consistent with [crise cardiaque], acute coronary thrombosis occlusive in the circumflex artery and severe coronary atherosclerosis. »
“No other traumatic or suspicious lesion was observed”, specifies Me Tremblay.
Back from Mexico
Dan Marino had been staying in Mexico since November 2021, but had returned to Quebec due to health issues, the report said. He complained of extreme fatigue and stomach aches. He had consulted on January 31, 2022 in connection with his health problems.
“All of the evidence gathered during my investigation indicates that Mr. Marino died of heart disease and that it was a natural death,” concluded the coroner.
