Doug Hurley is the new mayor of the borough of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève. The Ensemble Montréal candidate and former police officer of the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) won a landslide victory against his Projet Montréal opponent on Sunday.
Doug Hurley collected 78.4% of the votes against 21.6% for Ghassan Baroudi, from Valérie Plante’s team.
A resident of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève for four decades, Mr. Hurley was a police officer for more than 30 years with the SPVM, notably holding the positions of intervention agent and commander in the criminal investigations division.
“My first words go to the residents who placed their trust in me and to the volunteers who supported me throughout my campaign,” commented Mr. Hurley shortly after his victory. “For me, L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève is not just the borough that we visit just during election time. It has been my living environment for almost 40 years. I can’t wait to get to work improving the community’s quality of life, bringing it together and giving it the voice it deserves at Montreal City Hall. »
A by-election was made necessary following the resignation of Mayor Stéphane Côté last August. Elected as mayor of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève under the banner of Ensemble Montréal in November 2021, Mr. Côté cited symptoms of fatigue and stress to explain his decision to leave office in the middle of his term. mandate.
On the X network (formerly Twitter), Mayor Valérie Plante welcomed Doug Hurley’s victory. “I would like to congratulate Doug Hurley on his victory in the by-election for borough mayor of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève,” she wrote. “Our administration is that of all Montrealers. It is therefore with enthusiasm that we will work with the new mayor to effectively deliver the projects of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève. »
The leader of Ensemble Montréal, Aref Salem, did not hide his enthusiasm following the decisive result in favor of his candidate. “The result is proof that citizens are satisfied with the trust they have placed in us. Our party is in a good position to put an end to the glory days of the current administration in the central city,” he commented.
The participation rate was 29.7% while 4,142 of the 13,956 registered voters exercised their right to vote. Doug Hurley will be sworn in Friday.
