(Washington) Alex Ovechkin scored the 741e career goal to join Brett Hull for fourth in National Hockey League history on Monday, and he helped the Washington Capitals to a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabers.
Tom Wilson scored twice and Evgeny Kuznetsov collected three assists to help the Capitals end a three-game losing streak.
Ovechkin added two assists, including one on Wilson’s first goal that gave the Capitals a lead they’ve never lost.
Connor McMichael and John Carlson were the other scorers for the winners as goaltender Vitek Vanecek turned back 20 pucks.
Cody Eakin, Anders Bjork and Colin Miller provided the answer to the Sabers, who suffered a fifth straight loss, including four in regulation. Dustin Tokarski made 25 saves.
After starting Monday tied for first among NHL scorers, Ovechkin scored his 11e net of the season when he deflected a shot from Dmitry Orlov, halfway through the second period.
The goal gave the Capitals a 3-1 lead that lasted until Bjork hit the target early in the third period.
However, less than three minutes later, Wilson completed his first game with at least two goals since March. After receiving a pass from Kuznetsov, he lodged the puck between Tokarski’s pads to bring the score 4-2.
