Our suggestions for July 4th at the Montreal International Jazz Festival

Strength

Let me repeat ourselves: Ariel Engle (La Force solo, All Hands_Make Lights duet with Efrim Menuck) is one of the most beautiful voices in town, period. Her recent album XO Skeleton has been selected in the pre-selection of contenders for the Polaris Prize. Esplanade de la Place des Arts, 7 p.m.

Kenny Garrett

This concert will be a bit of a celebration of four decades of career as a leader for the composer and saxophonist, who notably accompanied Miles Davis in his last period (1988-1991). Théâtre Duceppe, 9 p.m.

Joel Ross’ Good Vibes

In the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, the young composer and band leader New Yorker (born in Chicago) Joel Ross is at the forefront of jazzy vibraphone — he will be presenting material from his fourth album, Nubluespublished last February. Place Tranquille, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
