Despite Heinz’s apparent market dominance, the supply of tomato ketchups is surprisingly large. Twelve journalists from The Press blind tasted seven varieties with fries from Montreal Pool Room.

Sold at Maxi and Provigo, the President’s Choice brand ketchup clearly pleased our testers. He obtained a cumulative score of 86 out of 120. He is also the only recipient of a perfect score. Among the comments, we note: “My idea of ​​ketchup” and “Pronounced taste, tomato. Classic! »

Sans nom ketchup, found at Maxi, was also a resounding success. His cumulative score of 81 is supported by the comments: “My favorite! and “Little extra taste of spice.” Not bad ! »

Compliments Canadian Tomato Ketchup took third place in our test with a score of 85. One of our testers commented that the “spice present” made it “interesting.”

The only entirely Quebec product of the lot, Quetchup, from Canada Sauce, unfortunately did not please our group at all. It only got a score of 32 and was called “too watery” and “too vinegary”.

Even when blinded, Heinz ketchup takes top honors with a score of 91. One tester noted “its perfect balance of sweet, salty, vinegary and umami.”

Ketchup Selection

The Sélection line of ketchups, available at Metro and Super C, divided our testers. It obtained a cumulative score of 78, but some gave it 9 and others, 2. We remember “a nice lifted touch”, but also an “over-pronounced acidity”.

French’s

French’s Ketchup

Best known for its mustard, French’s offers a ketchup that didn’t stand out in our test. It got a score of 67.5, but one of the comments still underlines its “smokiness, more flavor and flavor”.

Methodology

Each of the testers gave a score out of 10 to each of the ketchups. He also gave his brief impressions. A few of them also indicated that the majority of the products had a similar taste.
