(Ottawa) Federal officials say six decades of road salt use has spelled the end of a 123-year-old interprovincial bridge in Ottawa.
The Alexandra Bridge will have to be demolished due to rust, purchasing department officials say.
The procurement process for a new bridge will begin in the fall, when the public will have the opportunity to weigh in on three design options.
Officials declined to say how much they thought it would cost, but a 2018 estimate suggested the new bridge would cost $800 million.
The bridge was opened in 1901 and carried trains, trams and horse-drawn carts.
It is currently closed to vehicles for maintenance work until early next year and will likely be demolished by 2030.
