Ottawa urged to protect biodiversity of airport lands

(Montreal) Two Montreal MPs and a biodiversity activist group are calling on Ottawa to protect a vast natural area leased and managed for many years by Aéroport de Montréal (ADM) after it “razed” more than 4,000 milkweeds at the end of June, according to Technoparc Oiseaux.

Marhaw Rizqy, provincial deputy for Saint-Laurent, Alexandre Boulerice, federal deputy for Rosemont—La-Petite-Patrie, as well as Technoparc Oiseaux demanded on Tuesday with the same voice a change to the lease between Ottawa and ADM or the creation of a federal park, in order to protect an ecosystem of approximately 200 hectares located north of Montreal.

A site equivalent to Mount Royal, argued Ms.me Rizqy. The Technoparc Oiseaux organization is indignant at the latest work recently carried out by ADM on part of this land which had been left fallow since 2012. It deplores the destruction of plants, flowers and shrubs during the nesting period.

ADM defended itself earlier this week in comments relayed by certain media to have razed the ground, speaking instead of mowing the lawn and normal maintenance operations.
